It is extremely important to have safe and compliant portable appliances in the workplace and the process of testing and tagging ensures that they are.

 

Each individual item is visually checked for safety and then tested via an electronic device. Once tested, a tag is placed on the item to confirm that it has been tested, along with the qualified person's license number, the test date and when the next test is due. All items tested are logged.

Testing and tagging is not a legislative requirement for all workplaces but the employer does have a duty of care to ensure the safety of its employees. By testing and tagging all appliances in use by team members, it ensures they are using safe equipment. In the case that someone was hurt from an appliance that wasn’t tested and was unsafe, the employer could be found liable. To minimise any risk and confirm a safe environment, it is advised to have all portable electrical appliances tested.

Items that should be tested include:

  • Lunch room items, ie toasters, microwaves and kettles

  • Computers and accessories, ie monitors, towers and printers

  • Office equipment, ie shredders, laminators and photocopiers
